Digestive problems

People usually associate osteopaths with backs and necks but these are not the only areas that osteopaths deal with.
People with a hunched forward posture, may be squashing the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, which could reduce the effective functioning of the digestive system. Osteopaths can work into the abdomen to release tight muscles and ligaments and reduce tension around the organs, which can also help to release tension in the spine.
The diaphragm which is a big muscle and plays a large role in breathing, can be very tight and can be linked to back and shoulder pain. Releasing that and practising breathing techniques can be beneficial.

If the person has a very restricted back this can irritate the nerves, which supply the relevant organs, and so reducing their effectiveness, causing indigestion and reflux. The osteopath can use a variety of techniques to reduce restrictions and tension in the back and so also help improve functioning of the digestive system.

If a person is very stressed their body may behave as though they are in a “fight or flight” situation which reduces the actions of the digestive system. The osteopath may be able to help by relieving stress and tension with gentle techniques such as cranial osteopathy, massage and advice regarding relaxation.
